"Nevertheless, without going so far as to describe Hughes' contribution to British jazz as a milestone in its development, it was undoubtedly an important one, not to be under-estimated, hence my reason for referring to it over forty years later.
Despite the fact that its life span amounted to three sessions his American orchestra was a formidable ensemble, and served to draw our attention to the great players it contained, some of whom had previously been virtually unknown to us. "
Also, the importance of his New York recordings is indicated by the fact that they are still "in print" with "5 star" reviews

Finch Noyes
[edit]It is many years since I read The Art of Coarse Cricket, but after reading in this article that Finch Noyes was the birth name of Charmian Hughes, I was inanely delighted to recall that Hughes dropped this name in Coarse Cricket in a piece of dialogue describing a friend fortuitously recruiting an extra player for a short-handed Coarse Cricket team. "Are you still short for Sunday? Because if so I'll bring a chap called Finch Noyes along. He used to play for..." Captain Pedant (talk) 19:31, 13 January 2019 (UTC)
